Step by Step Latching Tips
Step one: sit in a relaxed position. Think guy watching tv on the couch relaxed.
Step two: place baby skin to skin face down in the middle of your chest.
Step three: allow baby to root and move towards either nipple.
Step four: squeeze breast flat like a hamburger and move baby's head toward the nipple. Squeezing the breast allows baby to get a deeper latch easier.
Step five: once baby latches do breast compressions. These consist of squeezing the side of the breast gently. Breast compressions help increase milk flow, making it easier for baby to nurse.
Latching tips:
-
If baby is too fussy to latch try rocking or patting their back or bottom while attempting to latch them.
-
Keep baby as close to your body as possible. If there is space between baby's chest and your body this can cause a shallow latch.
